Kootenay National Park’s Numa Creek wildfire, which has been smouldering since late July, blew up into a major conflagration Thursday afternoon, August 22. By 6:30 in the evening, trees were crowning high above the mouth of the Numa Creek valley, and fire was moving towards the Vermilion River and Highway 93.

The lightning-ignited fire prompted Parks Canada to close the central section of the Rockwall Trail (Tumbling Pass to Numa Pass) on July 29. With this dramatic increase in fire activity, there is little hope that the Rockwall Trail or Numa Creek trail will reopen this summer.
